Every autumn during the Second Empire, Napoleon III and Eugénie brought together the cream of the aristocratic, diplomatic, cultural and government circles at Compiègne for stays that have gone down in history as the"Séries".The Compiègne Séries naturally included excursions to Pierrefonds Castle in the company of the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
